Our mission

At Xval, we are committed to delivering the best actuarial modeling system that has ever existed. That means giving actuaries complete access of their model calculations, the ability to change them, and the power to communicate with all stakeholders.

We started because our founder, Timothy Quast, was frustrated with the existing solutions. As an auditor, he would spend weeks waiting on audit clients to respond to simple questions. Not from dishonesty, but because his audit clients simply could not figure out what their own model was doing! He decided that the only way to fix it was to create a system that is maximally transparent, so that all stakeholders can figure out what any given model is doing.

Xval will transform the way that actuaries communicate. Instead of trying to lock you in to our system, it will always be as easy as possible to migrate
off
of Xval. In this new paradigm, you will know what your models do and you will control them.

Meet the team

Founded by professionals with deep experience.

Xval combines over 3 decades of experience in actuarial, software engineering, and business administration.

Xval started because Timothy Quast, a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and practicing actuary, had a simple idea: what if we made modeling software that is actually good? Instead of locking our customers in to an opaque system that causes endless headaches, let's make it as easy as possible to leave. We are counting on an ironic force: if it is as easy as possible to leave, all of our customers will want to stay forever!

Timothy shared his vision with Daniel, an experienced software engineer and dev-ops professional with deep startup experience. Daniel was reluctant at first, but after several months Timothy was able to persude him to join. Together, they built

xact
: Xval's logic engine that makes it simple to write your actuarial formulas and have them automatically auditable in Excel.

Timothy and Daniel continued developing the web application and expanding xact's capabilities. They eventually pulled in Ian, an experienced executive and investor to advise them as they sought to bring their invention to customers.

Now we have formed Xval. Our vision is to change the face of actuarial modeling by giving you control of your models and the means to communicate their intricacies to all stakeholders. We are dedicated to delivering the best actuarial modeling system that has ever existed.

  • Timothy Quast

    Founder / CEO

    Timothy started his career at AIG Life & Retirement (now Corebridge Financial) in various pricing and valuation roles. After that, he moved into consulting and audit work at Deloitte. Seeing all sides of the modeling process showed Timothy that there is a deep lack of quality in the existing solutions. He aims to fix that with Xval.

  • Daniel Zapata

    Co-Founder / CTO

    Daniel has been programming systems and servers since he was in middle school. He made it a career by working at several web startups since (and during) college. He's a brilliant software engineer with profound knowledge of networking, applications, and security.

  • Ian Reynolds

    Executive Advisor

    Ian is an investor and operator who began his career in startups, has completed over $10B in M&A and restructuring. His experience running acquired companies, service as the Head of Venture Partners Golden Section Venture Capital, and Managing Partner at Thesis Capital provides deep operational and financial insight for the Xval team.
